Manchester Royal Infirmary installs Acuson X300 for FAST scanning

20 March 2008

The Emergency Medicine ITU of Manchester Royal Infirmary has installed an Acuson X300 ultrasound system from Siemens.

The new system is currently used for abdominal, musculoskeletal and vascular examinations within the Emergency Department. It will be used in the coming months for basic echocardiography and cardiovascular examinations, and for training specialist registrars in FAST examination techniques (focused abdominal sonography for trauma). The ACUSON X300 is also aiding clinicians working on a cardiac research project relating to breathlessness.

Dr Simon Carley, Consultant in Emergency Medicine, said: “The new system is undoubtedly very intuitive, manoeuvrable and easy to operate, with excellent imaging and data logging capabilities. It has enabled us to carry out a lot more dynamic examinations which aid accurate diagnosis, and this provides our patients with a much slicker process than previously available.”

The ACUSON X300 combines a new ergonomic design with fully-featured performance and innovative features normally found only on premium systems. Its excellent image quality coupled with penetration up to 30 cm enables uncomplicated examination of patients who are difficult to scan.
